Mobile Operators Poised to Take Advantage of Next Gen Prepaid Services; Three More India Networks Powered by Telcordia Real Time Charging

Latest White Paper Highlights How Next-Generation Services Will Challenge the Limitations of Existing Prepaid Platforms -- but With Challenge Comes Opportunity

PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwire - October 6, 2009) - Telcordia is advising mobile network operators that it is time to upgrade legacy prepaid to accommodate developments such as service bundling, new charging models, new revenue sources, and advanced, highly interactive services -- particularly as prepaid subscriber growth outstrips the post paid market due to continued rapid uptake in emerging markets.

"We are seeing exciting developments in the prepaid environment and, based on our interaction with communication service providers around the world, next-generation prepaid is a competitive necessity," said Mike Wojcik, President, Service Delivery Solutions, Telcordia. "The legacy prepaid equipment is there, but advancements to the next-generation capability will be required to accommodate the changes in real-time offers for prepaid and post-paid consumers."

Recent multi-million dollar wins in India -- the world's second-largest, fastest-growing and hyper competitive mobile market -- prove the need for a next-generation prepaid platform for operators looking to encourage and capitalize on the uptake of advanced services with a largely prepaid customer base. With recent contracts with communication service providers such as Aircel, Unitech Wireless and Tata DoCoMo, Telcordia is demonstrating that Telcordia® Real-Time Charging, powered by the Telcordia® Converged Application Server, are essential for the efficient, revenue-generating delivery of advanced services.

"In many regions consumers prefer a prepaid mobile phone to being tied into a monthly contract. Prepaid gives the consumer precise control over how much is spent on mobile services," said Peter Mottishaw, Principal Analyst at Analysys Mason. "The number of prepaid subscribers globally will grow at 12% annually for the next five years and exceed 5 billion by 2013. India and Asia Pacific currently account for more than 43% of global prepaid subscribers and is experiencing rapid growth."

In its latest white paper, "Prepaid Charging Is Graduating to a Starring Role in Interactive Services," Telcordia asserts that operators' prepaid charging environments can play a significant role in mobile communications by serving as a launch pad for next-generation service offerings.

The white paper outlines how the legacy capability of the prepaid charging engine is ready to be evolved to meet new demands and maximize operator benefit by enriching the customer experience. The white paper sees today's prepaid customers as fundamentally different users to the traditional demographic; prepaid customers now take advantage of all the advanced services that are available to them, and operators need to leverage their real-time prepaid platform as a service incubator to capitalize on this new type of customer. Current and future shifts in bundling, charging, revenue sourcing, tariffing, collecting and service creation are also cited as key drivers for the need to upgrade prepaid platforms.

The white paper highlights four key components of the next-generation prepaid platform that operators will need to adopt:

-- Service-creation environment that enables service differentiation and
integration by allowing service providers to create applications or modify
    the vendor's pre-packaged applications.
-- General-purpose application server that can run enhanced prepaid and
converged applications while still being fully real time and highly
    available.
-- Pre-created and pre-built services to enable policy control,
    advertising, VPN and number translation.
-- Charging engine for capturing real-time information about subscribers
and services, a flexible rating engine, and interfaces to integrate within
    service-oriented architecture (SOA).
