MobileMonday Toronto Kicks Off Its Fifth Season with Expert Canada-Brazil Mobile Panel

Brazil-Samba, Soccer and Mobile

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 4, 2010) -

Attention Business and Technology Editors.

On October 4, 2010, MobileMonday Toronto, Canada's largest networking group for mobile professionals will kick-off its fifth season with a unique event titled, "Brazil – Samba, Soccer and Mobile". The event will be moderated by Ronald Gruia, Principal Analyst and Program Leader – Emerging Telecoms for Frost & Sullivan. Guest panel members from Brazil include Marcelo Godoy and Paulo Hartmann, organizers and creators of MobileFest (, an international group responsible for creative development and media partnerships in Brazil in addition to research and development through MobileFest Labs.

Brazil is an emerging economic powerhouse and has joined the "Wireless G-7". With 175M+ mobile subscribers, it represents a market that is ripe for new services and applications, and which ranks fifth in the world for mobile subscribers behind China, India, the United States and Russia. With the fall launch of MobileMonday Toronto @ MaRS, the expert panel of Brazilian mobile executives will share successful strategies to enter the marketplace and highlight successes, challenges and best practices.

"In the past, mobile innovations started in Asia, moved to Europe, and eventually landed in the Western Hemisphere," explains co-founder, Alex Bosika. Now, with the recent transformative changes in the mobile industry, a seismic shift has occurred where North & South America are leading the wireless revolution to drive innovation in software, media and devices in the coming decade. "As South America moves away from feature phones to smartphones, we can expect innovation to expand rapidly in the region and especially in nations such as Brazil," adds co-founder Jim Brown.

"Brazil has a vibrant and highly competitive wireless industry, with an unparalleled market potential vis-à-vis other Latin American countries in terms of penetration, MOU per capital, mobile spend / GDP, and other factors such as the improved macroeconomic prospects and the winning bids for the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016," suggests Ronald Gruia, Principal Analyst, Frost & Sullivan. He further adds, "The increased affordability of handsets (due to increased subsidization) and some prepaid plans have translated into an impressive subscriber base of 188 million users, placing the country 5th in the world in terms of subscriber base. Lower per-minute pricing and mobile termination rates will lead to increased fixed-to-mobile substitution in the future and further aid mobile growth and development."
