Modernizing an Important Cultural Showcase in the Eastern Townships

Government of Canada Supports the Centre culturel de l'Universite de Sherbrooke


SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Oct. 15, 2014) - Department of Canadian Heritage

The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, today announced $1 million in funding for the Centre culturel de l'Université de Sherbrooke. He made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

This amount, provided through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, will be used for an important upgrade to theatrical infrastructure and stage equipment in Salle Maurice-O'Bready, a premier cultural venue in the Eastern Townships.

  • The Centre culturel de l'Université de Sherbrooke, founded in 1964, is home to Salle Maurice-O'Bready (Quebec's fourth largest performance hall), an art gallery and four foyers.
  • The Centre attracts more than 200,000 people each year for a range of events, including conferences, art exhibits and professional shows in disciplines such as theatre, dance, comedy, music and song.
  • The project involves the acquisition and installation of digital circuits, stage dressing, an orchestra pit, audience seating, as well as systems for lifting, lighting, sound and video.
