MomConnect Survey Reveals That Halloween Is "in" While Spending Is Slightly Down

Almost Half of Moms Will Spend Less This Year, But Most Will Celebrate Halloween

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - October 26, 2009) - MomConnect, a site dedicated to moms helping other moms, today announced the results of a Halloween survey that revealed the economy's impact on Halloween spending, as well as the way families will be celebrating this year. Out of the moms who participated in the MomConnect survey, 45 percent said that they would spend less this year for Halloween costumes and sweets, but 70 percent of them said that they would celebrate Halloween and take their kids trick-or-treating, despite the fact that Halloween falls on a Saturday night. The rest of them will find time for both trick-or-treating and other Saturday-night activities while some (only 7 percent) will host their own Halloween party.

"We expected spending to be down this year, but I am glad to see that families still spend money on Halloween and celebrate the holiday. I guess that we can say that the recession did not scare Halloween away," said Lovina Worick, president and founder of MomConnect. "Our survey revealed that moms would spend an average of $25-$50 on Halloween-related activities and accessories, including costumes and candy. I am looking forward to seeing some interesting costumes this year, as some families can't afford store-bought ones and have to be more creative."

Melissa Sywensky, A MomConnect mom who participated in the Halloween spending feedback, shared her Halloween savings tips with other moms, "This year our daughter will be using clothes from her dress up clothes to be a princess and friends of ours are lending us their son's costume from last year. But normally we try to do second hand costumes (from garage sales, thrift shops, or home made ones). It saves a lot of money that way."
