Monarch Adds Extra Seats to Cope with Festive Demand

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 21, 2012) - Monarch has recently added thousands of seats to its existing schedule over the festive period, to meet the huge demand from Brits wanting to escape the cold climate at home for some winter sun.

In total, more than 17,500 seats to destinations including Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Gibraltar and Alicante have been added, with extra flights due to depart from Birmingham, Gatwick, Luton and Manchester airports between 19 December and 9 January. With plenty of cheap flights to Tenerife available at low prices, this destination in particular is expected to see a big upturn in visitors, having been a favourite of Brits at Christmas for many years now.

Christmas on a Canary Island is always going to be slightly different from what UK residents are used to at home, but there are plenty of activities on Tenerife to get British travellers feeling festive - not to mention traditional Christmas decorations adorning many of the streets of Tenerife, just as you'd expect on a UK high street. And, if you're in the Santa Cruz area, a classical open-air concert will be taking place on Christmas Day, aiming to put everyone well and truly in the Christmas spirit.

There could be snow on Mount Teide, but it's unlikely to be cold in Tenerife in December. In fact, sunbathing on Christmas Day is a popular pastime among visitors to the island during the festive season. The warm temperatures might have Santa Claus sweating in his red suit, but there's an added bonus for any kids who are still around by 5 of January.

The Tres Reyes (or Three Kings) are likely to pay a visit to Tenerife's towns on this day, giving away gifts to children. Depending on the town you're visiting, you might even get to see them arrive on camels! And if that's not enough, the next day you'll have the opportunity to indulge in the rosca de reyes or king's cake - a traditional, festive brandy-infused cake topped with candied fruit.

Christmas in Tenerife is undoubtedly different to the traditional British experience, but when you consider the busy high streets and freezing conditions currently afflicting the UK, the sunshine and balmy temperatures are a welcome relief!

Cheap flights to Tenerife from Manchester start from just £50 and flights also depart from London Gatwick, London Luton, Birmingham, Leeds/Bradford and East Midlands airports. For more information on affordable scheduled flights to the Canary Islands and many other destinations worldwide, visit
