Monument Restoration Project in Saskatchewan Made Possible Thanks to Government of Canada Support

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 9, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), and Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River announced today up to $25,000 in federal government support for a project in Green Lake, Saskatchewan to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"By supporting the restoration of cenotaphs and monuments across the country, the Government of Canada is ensuring sacred areas of commemoration reflect the respect and dignity befitting for Canada's Veterans," said Minister Blackburn. "These memorials show our Veterans that we will keep the torch of remembrance lit for generations to come."

The Northern Village of Green Lake will receive funding to restore the Green Lake Métis Veterans Monument. Located next to the Community Centre, this monument commemorates the many Métis men and women who served in the Second World War.

Planned restoration includes backfilling and grading a new site for the monument; relocating the monument to a more visible location; installing paving stones to form a large base; recovering the existing monument with stone; installing a bronze plaque to accommodate missing names; installing gravel walkways, ramp, and stairs, benches and lighting; and, landscaping.

"The Northern Village of Green Lake is a community that is proud of its history and heritage," said MP Rob Clarke. "The Government of Canada is pleased to support the restoration of the Green Lake Métis Veterans Monument. This restored monument will provide continued opportunities for the community to join together in celebration of their contribution to the Second World War."

Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
