More Frequent Weigh-Ins Correlate with Greater Sustainable Weight Loss

Weight metrics create self-awareness, allow for real-time interventions

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - November 04, 2016) - Weighing in at least four times a week correlates with greater weight loss, according to data presented today at the Obesity Society's 4th Annual ObesityWeek 2016 Conference in New Orleans.

The research also revealed that a higher frequency of weigh-ins relates to individuals maintaining their weight loss two years later. These findings were presented by researchers from Retrofit, a leading provider of weight-management and disease-prevention programs.

"Retrofit is the first program to demonstrate that weighing in more frequently is significantly associated with sustainable weight-loss," said Rezwan Ahmed, PhD, data scientist, Retrofit. "Stepping on the scale is crucial to weight loss and weight maintenance, because the metrics create more self awareness. Our master's-level coaches also use this information to intervene in real time and influence behaviors surrounding weight loss."

Researchers investigated the association between self-weighing frequency at different levels of weight-loss at 6-months and weight maintenance at 24-months. They analyzed three years of data from 1,357 Retrofit clients, 44 percent of whom were male and 56 percent female. Researchers found that individuals with greater than 5 percent weight loss stepped on the scale, on average, more than four (4.11) times per week.

"The scale can be an intimidating thing that evokes negative emotions, including anxiety, shame and frustration," said Scott Brunning, study co-author and lead exercise physiologist, Retrofit. "Our coaches work with our clients to overcome their fear and change their perspective to view the scale as a valuable tool to monitor their progress and make adjustments when necessary. This level of personalization leads to sustainable weight loss, directly setting us apart from others."

Retrofit provides its clients with a wireless scale, an activity tracker and a smart app and dashboard to log weight, food, sleep and activity. Clients simply step on the scale and wear their activity tracker to sync their metrics. They also receive a fully integrated experience through the personalized attention of a live master's-level coach, expert-led interactive classes and social support from an online community.
