More Than Just the "Three R's": The Research Is Out and It Says We Need to Educate the Heart as Well as the Mind

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 6, 2012) - This year, BC's Ministry of Education announced a heightened focus on literacy in this province. While reading, along with writing and arithmetic, has long been the focus of our education system, there is exciting new research showing that there is in fact a lot more to a child's education than the "Three R's".

The Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education has partnered with some of the province's leading researchers who this fall will be sharing what they now know about Heart-Mind well-being.

It's eye-opening research that tells us if we really want our children to thrive academically, we need to first allow them to thrive socially and emotionally.

The Educating the Heart Series, which begins September 27, will feature some of the leading minds in Heart-Mind learning.

The fall series includes Dr. Kimberly Reichl (UBC's Faculty of Education), Dr. David Osher (American Institute for Research) and Dr. Clyde Hertzman (UBC's Human Early Learning Partnership).

They each bring a unique perspective on child development and offer tools to help children and youth develop the key social and emotional competencies they need to do well in school and in life.

For parents and educators - and, really, anyone who cares for or about children - it's a chance to hear some of the latest thinking on how we can prepare our children for success in all facets of their lives.

"Cognitive growth is best nurtured through curiosity and positive interaction with parents, teachers and fellow students," says Victor Chan, Founding Director of the Dalai Lama Center. "And social and emotional well-being fosters the skills critical for learning throughout a child's life."
