Morning Glory Cycling Club-Thorncliffe Park Cycle Drive

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 19, 2013) - Morning Glory Cycling Club ("MGCC") is pleased to announce that it, in partnership with Gears Bike Shop ("Gears"), is holding a bike rally on Sunday September 22nd, 2013, from 1 pm until 4 pm, in order to provide over 100 bicycles to children and young adults from Thorncliffe Park.

MGCC is also pleased that multiple Olympic medal winner Curt Harnett is supporting our efforts and will be at the event, to be held in the parking lot of the East York Town Centre, at the corner of Overlea Boulevard and Thorncliffe Park Drive. Joining Curt will be Michael and Dede Barry. Dede, winner of a silver medal at the Athens Summer Olympics, and Michael, 3-time Olympian and rider of 11 Grand Tours, will both be present on Sunday.

The bikes have been generously donated by MGCC members, friends and the community at large in order to provide bikes to children and young adults of Thorncliffe Park without the financial means to obtain bicycles on their own. Each bike received has been tuned up by Gears to be ready for donation. Each recipient will also receive a helmet and lock for their bike, and be instructed about road safety and bike maintenance by volunteers from Evergreen Brickworks. We are also grateful that members of the Toronto Police Service will be onsite to help run the event.

Thorncliffe Park is a high density neighbourhood with limited resources. Almost one quarter of the population of Thorncliffe Park is under the age of 14 and it is home to North America's largest elementary school with more than 1500 children in Kindergarten to Grade 5.

MGCC is a collection of like-minded cyclists who love to see the sun rise, and which offers group rides in Leaside and High Park Monday through Sunday that target intermediate and advanced riders.
