Dentists at Aesthetic Smiles of New Jersey Discuss the Debilitating Symptoms of TMJ Disorder and the Advanced Treatments Available That Can Help Patients Minimize Pain

MORRISTOWN, NJ--(Marketwired - Feb 16, 2016) - The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research estimates that more than 10 million people in America suffer from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ), a condition involving the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. This particular joint enables the jaw to move properly when chewing, speaking, and simply opening and closing the mouth. TMJ Disorder can cause debilitating symptoms and ultimately have a significant effect on one's day-to-day life; however, New Jersey dentists Edward Romano, DDS and Dr. Matthew Vaccaro say there are numerous treatment options available that can dramatically reduce symptoms associated with this common condition.

Sometimes referred to as TMD, TMJ Disorder can be caused by a number of issues. The doctors say an imbalanced bite, teeth clenching or grinding, traumatic injury, arthritis, a breakdown of cartilage, and even simple overuse of the temporomandibular joint are just some of the factors that may lead to the condition. Symptoms of TMJ Disorder vary among each individual, and often include ailments that do not seem related to a problem with the jaw joint. Drs. Romano and Vaccaro say symptoms of TMJ Disorder may include:

  • Headaches
  • Earaches
  • Chronic facial pain
  • Pain while chewing
  • Jaw stiffness, clicking, or popping
  • Trouble opening and closing the mouth
  • Pain in the back, neck, or shoulders
  • Dizziness
  • Numbness in the arms and/or fingers

Last month, Dr. Romano and Dr. Vaccaro attended a continuing education seminar on TMJ treatment at The Dawson Academy, a world-renowned institute in St. Petersburg, Florida dedicated to advancing the field of dentistry. The dentists were able to learn more about dental occlusion (the relationship between the positions of the upper and lower teeth) and how it relates to the management of TMJ Disorder. Drs. Romano and Vaccaro say a comprehensive understanding of the teeth's relationship to the joints and muscles of the mouth is imperative to helping identify the best way to treat patients diagnosed with TMJ Disorder.

With that in mind, the doctors say there are a number of TMJ Disorder treatment options available that can help patients who are suffering from the condition. They explain that medications, bite and jaw therapies, restorative dentistry options such as crowns and porcelain veneers, and advanced techniques such as occlusal equilibration -- improving the patient's bite by reducing pressure on the joint and addressing the position of the teeth -- are just some of the treatment modalities that can be utilized. They note that customized mouthguards and even oral surgery have also been shown to relieve the symptoms of TMJ Disorder.

Ultimately, Drs. Romano and Vaccaro say individuals experiencing symptoms of the condition should consult with an experienced dental professional to find out if problems with the jaw joint may be the cause. If so, the doctors say a customized treatment plan can go a long way toward minimizing TMJ Disorder's effect on their lives and their livelihood.
