Mother and Son Make Convocation a Rare Family Affair

University of Calgary Spring Convocation, June 8 - 12, 2015

CALGARY, AB--(Marketwired - June 05, 2015) - Thousands of University of Calgary students will soon see years of hard work culminate in celebration. The University of Calgary community recognizes the perseverance and dedication of students and will celebrate this achievement with a full week of Convocation ceremonies.

One household in particular is preparing for two convocation ceremonies next week that will cross generations.

Katayoon Etemad (PhD, Computer Science) and her son Parsa Samavati (BSc, Mechanical Engineering at the Schulich School of Engineering) have completed their degrees at the same time making graduation a family affair.

While they've had different advisors along their separate academic paths, they do share one University of Calgary faculty member -- Faramarz Samavati, a Computer Science professor who is husband and father, respectively, to the pair. He'll be at both convocations along with 12-year-old son, Kian.

"We're having a really cool and interesting coincidence," said Parsa, 22. "Of course, this kind of thing doesn't happen for most people. It's a combination of me being born at a certain time and my mother and I taking the same five years to get our degrees."

Parsa's convocation is Tuesday afternoon and Katayoon's ceremony will be Thursday morning.

"It is very exciting for us both," says Katayoon, 45. "We didn't plan or know this was going to happen, but it's something we can share and will be able to look back on in the future."

After convocation, Katayoon and Parsa hope to take a few summer trips and relax. Parsa has done a 16-month internship at an oil company and is scheduled to start there full-time in September. Katayoon will be pursuing opportunities as well.

"This is a rare and interesting coincidence to have both my wife and son at the same convocation celebration," said Faramarz. "I am really proud of them."

Media are welcome to attend any of the convocation ceremonies throughout the week of June 8 - 12, 2015 to capture photos and remarks. Interviews may also be arranged. The spring convocation schedule can be found here.
