Motorcyclists Need to Stay Safe in Spring Showers, Warns Swinton

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - May 2, 2011) - Swinton Bikes is warning riders of the high chance of being caught out in a heavy rain shower at this time of year, which can often result in accidents.

The motorbike insurance retailer asked 1,200 online customers about riding in wet weather conditions and 17% of motorcyclists admitted that they lose confidence in the rain. A further 21% of riders admitted to having a minor accident as a direct result of wet weather conditions.

If motorcyclists are not used to or are not prepared for riding in wet weather it can result in serious injury. Swinton Bikes is offering some tips to motorcyclists so that they will know what to do if the sunny weather suddenly changes into a heavy spring shower.

  • Stopping distance will increase dramatically on a wet road surface so create more space between you and any traffic in front.
  • Extra caution is needed at junctions, as drivers' vision will be obscured with rain and spray- riding with lights on and moving in your lane slightly will give them a better chance of spotting you.
  • Wear all the necessary safety equipment, such as high visibility clothing, in all weather conditions, as you never know when the weather will change.
  • Enter corners cautiously; assess a corner before you get there to deduce the best line.
  • As in the dry weather, it's important to look well ahead and check out the road for potentially slippery hazards as far ahead as vision allows.
  • Be alert for puddles and oil spills- oil is doubly lethal in wet conditions.
  • Stay relaxed and confident; Riders not used to the rain have a tendency to lose all confidence in their riding ability and this can cause panic. Stay relaxed with your eyes and the bike pointed and driving gently in the right direction.
  • Although you may want to ride a gear higher than usual in the wet, try to stay in a responsive cog so there is always drive there if you need it.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Swinton Bikes said, "Even if bikers are used to driving in wet weather, they need to be aware that the risk of accidents increases so it is important that they remain alert, confident and take extra precautions so that they can avoid any unnecessary bike insurance claims."
