Moving Forward Together: Canada's Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime Releases Recommendations to the Government of Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 19, 2013) - Sue O'Sullivan, Canada's Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime today released a report containing nearly 30 recommendations to the Government of Canada on how to better meet the needs of victims. The report summarizes the findings of a two-day national forum held by her office earlier this year.

"On behalf of the planning team and all of the participants, I am proud to provide the Government of Canada with a clear and achievable vision for what Canada can become for victims of crime", said Ms. O'Sullivan. "These recommendations represent not only victims concerns from coast to coast, but the path forward. As the Government prepares to create the very first victims bill of rights, this report provides the insights and solutions necessary to ensure that victims are treated with the respect and courtesy they deserve."

On April 18th and 19th, 2013 the Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime (OFOVC) hosted a National Forum, bringing together the views, expertise and voices of more than 150 victims, victim serving agencies, law enforcement, academics and other key stakeholders. In addition to the report, the OFOVC also developed and released a series of eight videos featuring victims and victim-serving agencies talking to each of the themes elaborated throughout the Forum, such as the visibility of victims' voices, the need for equity in victim treatment across the country, assessing the criteria for who should be considered a victim of crime and the importance of sharing meaningful information.

"We have an opportunity with the upcoming bill of rights to rebalance the system for victims of crime in Canada", explained Ms. O'Sullivan, "and we have to get it right. By bringing victims' voices directly to Canadians and the Government through these powerful videos and this report our hope is to effect meaningful and relevant change for Canadian victims of crime."

The Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime helps victims to address their needs, promotes their interests and makes recommendations to the federal government on issues that negatively impact victims.
