mPhase Presents at NanoEurope 2008 on the Potential Use of the Smart NanoBattery in Wireless Sensor Systems

Talk Focuses on How Smart NanoBattery Can Be Used to Power Wireless Sensors and Other Electronic Devices

ST. GALLEN, SWITZERLAND--(Marketwire - September 16, 2008) - Leading microfluidics and nanotechnology development company mPhase Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: XDSL) a Silver Sponsor of the 2008 NanoEurope Congress and Exhibition in St. Gallen, Switzerland, will be describing how its revolutionary Smart NanoBattery can be used to supply primary or backup power for wireless sensors and other electronic devices. Representing mPhase is CEO of its wholly owned subsidiary AlwaysReady, Inc., Dr. Fred Allen. The title of his talk is, "The Smart NanoBattery for Wireless Sensor Systems: A Breakthrough in Energy Storage and Power Management," to be given in the Nanobased Electronics and Sensor Systems conference on September 17 at 16.00 h. ( 01_besucher/konferenzen/elektronik_sensor_programm.php)

At the core of the Smart NanoBattery is a proprietary honeycomb membrane made using standard silicon processing techniques employed in the semiconductor industry (e.g., lithography and etching) that keeps the electrolyte physically separated from the electrodes until the battery is activated or "turned on" when needed. Prior to being activated, the battery remains in a quiescent state with no self-discharge, power drain, or leakage to worry about. Activation may occur via a remote control switch or triggering mechanism such as a mechanical jolt, electrical pulse, or wireless radio frequency signal, thus providing Power On Command™ -- stored energy when and where it is needed. This enables significantly longer shelf-life compared to a typical battery (infinite in theory because there is no self-discharge prior to activation). This is valuable in situations where reliable power is critical, such as, remotely accessible wireless sensors, or millions of RFID tags sitting in inventory waiting to be deployed, or in emergency or medical equipment.

According to Ron Rurando, CEO of mPhase Technologies, Inc., "The potential use of the Smart NanoBattery in wireless sensors is outgrowth of research based upon mPhase's breakthrough in manipulating microfluidics on a nanostructured surface. This is also the subject of a $750,000 Phase II STTR grant recently awarded to mPhase by the U.S. Army to produce a long life battery for powering memory chips used in a computer application. This shows the relevance and versatility of this breakthrough technology."

In addition to the NanoEurope presentation, a white paper on the subject is available entitled, "Extending the Life of Wireless Sensor Networks Using the Smart NanoBattery."
