MSP Uses Kaseya to Recover Stolen Laptop Within 48 Hours, Prevents Customer Data From Being Exposed

Kaseya IT Services Automation Solution Remotely Wipes the Hard Drive and Leads Police to the Thief's Front Door

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - Jun 20, 2012) - Kaseya®, the leading global provider of automated IT systems management software, today announced that True North ITG used Kaseya to remotely wipe the hard drive of a stolen laptop and track down the perpetrator, preventing the customers' data from being exposed while recovering the equipment within 48 hours. Stolen out of an employee's vehicle, the laptop had sensitive personally-identifiable information (PII) on the hard drive.

"It was absolutely essential that we be able to protect that information from falling into the wrong hands," said Ted Grandpre, field service manager, True North ITG. "Kaseya gave us the management platform to remotely wipe the hard drive as soon as the laptop was booted up, and then take control of the system in the background to determine who had possession."

Using Technology to Outsmart Criminals
Using Kaseya's agent procedure module, the True North IT team created a script that would alert True North when the Kaseya agent tried to connect to the management server. As an agent-based solution, the Kaseya Agent maintains contact with the Kaseya Server to conduct maintenance tasks and perform security scans -- regardless of whether the machine is on the corporate network or not. As long as the system is connected to the Internet, Kaseya can monitor, track and execute commands remotely. Once the machine "checked in" to the Kaseya server, the True North IT tech wiped the hard drive of company data, ensuring the personally-identifiable information couldn't fall into the wrong hands. Grandpre made sure the team's actions remained under the radar while keeping most basic functions of the laptop operational so the thief wouldn't know they were being watched.

Over the next 24 hours, Grandpre and his team captured screenshots of activity on the missing laptop, including updates to the user's Facebook profile, timeline and social gaming. The coup d'état came when the user posted: "YES got a new lap top today!!!!and I'm loving it" as well as a name and photo of the user. A quick White Pages search turned up an address, and a Google search revealed a long criminal record with 49 arrests. The police were informed, and the laptop was recovered, cleansed and restored. Within 48 hours of reporting the theft, True North's customer had their laptop back in production.

Protecting Customer Data and Improving Service Delivery
True North's two-pronged security and business continuity strategy ensures that its customers' business information is protected at all times and stolen hardware can be recovered quickly and efficiently. The peace of mind its customers enjoy allows them to focus on their core mission rather than worry about the risks of enabling mobile productivity for their employees.

For True North, it's really about providing high-quality, efficient services to its customers, increasing revenue, keeping down costs and improving margins.

"Kaseya gives MSPs complete control over and visibility into their customers' IT environments, allowing them to proactively monitor, maintain and protect their systems in a cost-efficient and reliable method," said Peggy Knauft, vice president of marketing at Kaseya. "By automating and streamlining IT management, MSPs can improve service delivery while becoming much more profitable."
