Mt. Diablo Region YMCA Announces Restructuring Plan

Charitable East Bay Organization Makes Changes Based on Comprehensive Evaluation of Operations

PLEASANT HILL, CA--(Marketwire - March 3, 2010) -  The Mt. Diablo Region YMCA today announced that it has developed a restructuring plan that will enable the organization to continue to serve children, adults, seniors and families in communities throughout Contra Costa County. As part of this restructuring plan:

  • The Delta Family YMCA on O'Hara Avenue in Oakley will close on March 31, 2010, although the Oakley childcare facilities located on the Laurel, Gehringer and Vintage Parkway campuses will remain in place to serve the children enrolled in those programs.
  • Members of the Delta Family YMCA in Oakley can receive refunds for their membership, transfer their membership to the Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA in Pleasant Hill or donate the balance of their membership funds to the Mt. Diablo YMCA.
  • The health and fitness programs offered at the Clayton Community Gym will cease on March 31, 2010.
  • The Mt. Diablo YMCA executives and staff are working diligently to transfer program participants in the affected facilities to other comparable programs in the community.

This announcement follows a careful evaluation of the Mt. Diablo YMCA's operations by the Association Board of Directors, in partnership with YMCA of the USA, the national resource office for America's YMCAs. This evaluation concluded that the Mt. Diablo YMCA could no longer sustain continued operational losses associated with the Oakley and Clayton facilities primarily because both operations had less than 500 active members. The Board of Directors believes these difficult decisions will allow the Mt. Diablo YMCA to stabilize its operations during these challenging economic times.

"Changes such as facilities closures are always difficult for everyone, and we very much regret having to discontinue programs and close facilities. Our board, staff and volunteers are working diligently to minimize the impact these changes will have on members in Contra Costa County," said Rick Callaway, Chairman, Mt. Diablo Region YMCA Association Board. "These closures, as painful as they are, will allow the Mt. Diablo Region YMCA to continue to serve families and children at 22 childcare sites throughout the county, at the Irvin Deutscher Family YMCA in Pleasant Hill and through family and sports programs in the San Ramon Valley."
