Murata Selects GainSpan Ultra Low Power Wi-Fi Chipset for New Wi-Fi Module

Fully Integrated Module Ideal for Wireless Sensor Applications

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - Jul 13, 2011) - GainSpan® Corporation, a leading developer of ultra low power embedded Wi-Fi solutions, announced that Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd., the world-leading innovator in electronics and the largest global module supplier, has adopted GainSpan's GS1011 system-on-chip to build an "All-in-One" Wi-Fi module for sensor applications. The advanced module is one of the lowest power consuming of its kind, featuring a trace antenna and offering manufacturers a compact solution and fast time to market for sensor network devices.

Murata's "Complete W-LAN (Type SN)" module is an IP-based solution that integrates all components necessary for WLAN in a small 21.4 x 31 mm package. The Complete W-LAN is used to connect a large variety of sensors with Wi-Fi, by using the many analog and digital interfaces available on the GS1011 chip. In addition, this module makes it possible to very easily add -- through a serial interface and simple AT commands -- Wi-Fi connectivity to devices, using the serial to Wi-Fi software. By leveraging GainSpan's low power consumption and advanced power management technology, the Complete W-LAN is able to operate for years on a single AA battery.

"GainSpan's low power consumption chip, highly integrated and feature rich networking stack has allowed us to create a Wi-Fi module that allows our customers to add Wi-Fi capability to their designs quickly and easily," said Mitsuhiro Hoshii, Manager Product Engineering, Communication Module Division, Murata Manufacturing. "GainSpan's solution provided an excellent foundation for the development of our Wi-Fi module that achieves connectivity in a simple compact system. The module is now finding its way into many sensor devices and other embedded applications using 8- or 16-bit microcontrollers with limited resources, and in which Wi-Fi has thus far been difficult to implement."

"Murata is the largest supplier of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules worldwide, has an impressive range of sensors that can detect heat, infrared, vibration, acceleration, rotation, position, magnetism and electrical fields and is continuing to develop new innovative sensing technologies," said Bernard Aboussouan, VP Marketing at GainSpan. "We are very proud that they have selected our low power Wi-Fi chip, as they provide the capability to combine their advanced module and sensing technologies to bring innovative solutions to some of our key market segments, such as Healthcare and Smart Energy."
