Murchie's Purchased by Victoria Firm

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 17, 2007) - Murchie's Tea and Coffee, one of British Columbia's oldest companies, has been purchased by a private Victoria firm.

John Simson, president of Belmont Management Ltd. and Grant Kuebler, managing director of Murchie's Tea and Coffee (2007) Ltd., said they are pleased to confirm the purchase of Murchie's Tea & Coffee on behalf of a Victoria family.

"We're extremely happy that Murchie's, which has been an icon in British Columbia for 113 years, will remain a Canadian company under the management of British Columbians," said Kuebler.

More than a month ago, a receiver-manager was appointed for the Vancouver-based family firm, founded in 1894 in New Westminster. Kuebler said the plan is to maintain the excellent reputation the company has enjoyed in the past as a purveyor of fine teas and coffees, and build the company in the future. The business includes the sale of teas and coffees - both bulk and packaged, accessories and preserves, as well as operating food and beverage bars in each retail location.

The company plans to retain all its present locations including five in the Lower Mainland and one in Victoria. The company operates outlets in the Park Royal Centre, West Vancouver Public Library, West Pender Street in downtown Vancouver, Oakridge Shopping Centre, the Semiahmoo Centre in White Rock and on Government Street in Victoria. A roasting and packaging plant in Richmond is also part of the operation.

Murchie's core business is focused on procuring the highest grades of fairly traded teas and coffees obtained from the finest tea gardens and coffee farms. All of these products are shipped directly to the plant in Richmond, B.C. where the coffees are freshly roasted and teas are blended and packaged for sale along with the company's own spices and spice blends, through the company's retail locations, mail order division, corporate beverage services, wholesale retailers and grocery stores.

Murchie's has two commercial kitchens, one in the plant in Richmond and the other in Victoria. These kitchens produce all of the company's fresh savouries and pastries for their beverage bars as well as specialty product lines including gourmet condiments, preserves and baked goods for retail sales.

"Our philosophy is grounded in purchasing products only from growers that contribute to requisite wages, schools and medical facilities for their workers," said Kuebler. "We only purchase shade grown, high grade washed Arabica coffee beans. This tradition of excellence started with founder John Murchie more than a century ago and this excellence is continued today."

Kuebler said, "Gwen Murchie, former president of the company and the selling shareholder will stay involved with the firm in a consulting role."
