Muscular Dystrophy Canada Award Recipients Honoured by BC Premier Christy Clark

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 30, 2011) - Two of Muscular Dystrophy Canada's brightest stars have been awarded BC Community Achievement Awards by Premier Christy Clark and Keith Mitchell, chair of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation.

Kalliana King of Cowichan Bay and Brian Hutchinson of North Vancouver are being celebrated for their community service. That community service includes helping to raise awareness and funds for Canadians affected by a neuromuscular disorder.

In June of 2009, 8-year-old Kalliana shaved her head for her friend Adam and "all kinds of kids" who have muscular dystrophy. She raised over $14,000 and brought muscular dystrophy to the attention of her peers and community members. Kalliana is Muscular Dystrophy Canada's 2010 Courage to Inspire Award recipient.

Brian Hutchinson is Advisor for the Vancouver Fire & Rescue Services/Fire Fighters' Union, Local 18, and one of Muscular Dystrophy Canada's most passionate supporters. His incredible enthusiasm has inspired and motivated others to join him in working towards a brighter future for Canadians with muscular dystrophy. Brian is Muscular Dystrophy Canada's 2010 Fire Fighter of the Year Award recipient.

"We're delighted to learn that Kalliana and Brian are being honoured by the province of British Columbia. These two individuals are great role models. Their contribution to Muscular Dystrophy Canada and the community is extraordinary!" says Catherine Sherrard, Muscular Dystrophy Canada's CEO.

Congratulations Kalliana and Brian!
