The launch of MyHealthyWaist, an iPad application designed especially for health professionals by experts from the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk of Université Laval in partnership with Nurun, an international interactive marketing agency, was announced today.

A sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits have led to a global epidemic of abdominal obesity that can no longer be ignored. The MyHealthyWaist iPad application is a powerful and reliable clinical tool developed to assist doctors and health professionals to quickly and efficiently evaluate each patient's cardiometabolic risk and to monitor the risk over time.

By gathering important data on lifestyle such as abdominal adiposity, level of physical activity and quality of the diet (including consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages), this new application has revolutionized the way that the overall risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes is calculated. The application uses 21 algorithms and risk variables – calculated in real-time – all together in one convenient iPad application.

"The MyHealthyWaist app provides automated and user-friendly tools for assessment of cardiometabolic risk we can use at the desk and the bedside to engage with patient participation in estimation and education regarding this aspect of health, " said Dr. Peter Libby, MD, Chief, Cardiovascular Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA.

What's more, the application comes with the iBook on abdominal obesity by Dr. Jean-Pierre Després, professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Université Laval and Director of Research in Cardiology at the Centre de recherche de l'Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de Québec. Such features provide a time-saving learning resource for the practitioner.

The MyHealthyWaist application for iPad is now available online for free at or from the Apple App Store.
