Myxer BoomBox Report Reveals Findings on Mobile-Social Sharing

Survey of 1,022 Users Shows Images Are Most Shared Content; Facebook, Google+ Are Preferred Platforms

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwire - Apr 12, 2012) - Myxer, a top 15 U.S. mobile destination for free, ad-supported social entertainment, today released its latest BoomBox Report highlighting key trends in mobile-social sharing.

The report, "Social Sharing in a Mobile World" reinforces the leadership position of Facebook as a social sharing platform but also indicates strong usage of Google+ on mobile. In addition, the survey shows that more than 50% of respondents shared images from their mobile devices. Facebook's $1 billion purchase of Instagram this week underscores its recognition of the popularity of image sharing.

Myxer surveyed 1,022 of its mobile users to better understand their present attitudes and behaviors regarding mobile-social sharing. Not surprisingly, when asked how they share images, video and music, users indicated Facebook was the dominant platform. When it comes to sharing from a computer, 58% use Facebook for sharing images and video, as compared to 42% who use Facebook to share from mobile devices. SMS was the second most popular platform for mobile sharing with 37% of users. On computers, email was second with 17% of respondents using it for sharing images and video.

Facebook and Google+

While Facebook was the most popular social network for sharing from mobile devices, Google+ was the second most used social network for sharing from a mobile device, with 10% of respondents indicating usage. By comparison, Twitter was only used for sharing images and video on mobile by 2% of the survey.

Is The Death of The CD Exaggerated?

In determining how mobile users shared and listened to music, the BoomBox Report asked, "What is the primary way you listen to music?" Surprisingly, the number one response was CDs, with 26% of respondents putting the seemingly outdated platform at the top of their lists. Internet radio was second with 17%, followed closely by broadcast (AM/FM) with 16%.

Who Are We Sharing All This Content With?

Of respondents ages 13-17, 64% said they shared the most content from their phones with their friends, and only 19% shared with family. "Friends" was the top choice for mobile sharing for those aged 18-24 and 25-34. Respondents age 35 or older had a much more even distribution of their preferred mobile sharing across friends and family.

"What's interesting here is that everyone wrote off Google+, but as a mobile-social sharing platform, nobody should count it out," said Andrew Coury, marketing and customer analytics manager at Myxer. "As the interaction between mobile and social grows deeper, these insights are informative to advertisers in the mobile space."
