NACD Releases Membership and Safety Report Demonstrating Increased Growth and Safety

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwired - November 19, 2014) - According to the 2014 Membership & Safety Report released at the association's 43rd Annual Meeting today, members of the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) drove more than 140 million miles delivering 50 tons of products every minute last year (2013). The report showed a reduction in Occupational Safety and Health Administration recordable cases to 549, from 594 the previous year, demonstrating the industry's continued commitment to safety.

In 2013, NACD member companies generated $31.2 billion in sales, a slight increase of two percent from the year before. The report also notes that NACD member companies are responsible for more than 155,000 direct and indirect jobs in the United States and hired 5.4 percent more workers than the previous year.

NACD members operate in all 50 states through over 1,800 facilities and make a delivery every 7.3 seconds. The average value of an individual shipment amounted to $7,270, maintaining the trend of increased shipment value over the last decade. Members have reduced their overall number of shipments while carrying more tonnage per shipment, bundling them to reduce cost and lower their environmental impact.

Incidents involving transportation saw largely positive results. Total incidents experiencing uncontrolled releases of product while storing, handling, loading or unloading within the companies' facilities significantly decreased to 29 compared to 123 the prior year, while the number of Department of Transportation 5800 submissions increased slightly to 13 from 8 the previous year. Incidents involving transportation or delivery decreased slightly to 36 incidents, down from 39 in 2012.

Safety performance of the whole membership remained better than non-member companies in the Chemical and Allied Merchant Wholesale Industry (NAICS 42469) and nearly twice as good as all manufacturing combined, based on the most current data available.

"In 2013, our members demonstrated a continued commitment to the safety and security of their employees and surrounding communities through Responsible Distribution while proving they can grow the economy and create jobs. This year's results show chemical distributors are determined to prosper while remaining steadfast in their commitment to improving safety," said NACD President Eric R. Byer.

NACD began tracking the results of its membership and performance data on a voluntary basis in 2001. The data in the 2014 Report is based on submissions from the NACD regular membership and are based on 2013 results.

NACD and its nearly 450 member companies are vital to the chemical supply chain providing products to over 750,000 end users. NACD members are leaders in health, safety, security, and environmental performance through implementation of Responsible Distribution, established in 1991 as a condition of membership and a third-party verified management practice.
