Naomi Klein to Honour U of T Picket Line in Support of Striking CUPE Education Workers

No Logo' and 'This Changes Everything' author's April 7 event in question as Klein calls on University to return to bargaining table

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - March 13, 2015) - Journalist, columnist, and bestselling author Naomi Klein will honour the picket line at University of Toronto, in support of striking U of T Education workers, members of Unit 1, Local 3902 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3902-1).

Klein, author of No Logo: Taking on the Brand Bullies, The Shock Doctrine and most recently, This Changes Everything, is scheduled to speak at the Isabel Bader Theatre April 7, for a lecture with author Thomas King.

However, U of T's refusal to resume bargaining with CUPE 3902 'changed everything'.

"I have been very much looking forward to my planned speaking event with Thomas King, a writer I greatly admire," Klein said in a statement released today.

It goes on to state that Klein "will not cross a picket line, especially at my alma mater."

CUPE 3902-1 represents 6,000 U of T education workers, who went on strike February 27 in an effort to achieve improvements to poverty line wages and precarious contract work.

Klein called on University of Toronto administration to return to the bargaining table stating she hopes "this dispute is resolved and the event can go ahead as planned."

Erin Black, Chair of CUPE 3902, expressed her appreciation for Klein's honouring of the picket line.

"We are overwhelmed by Naomi's show of solidarity for our members. Gestures such as Naomi's and Maude Barlow, who also cancelled a recent engagement, demonstrate to U of T administration that it is not 'business as usual'," said Black.

"Until administration sits down with our bargaining team, stops encouraging strike-breaking tactics and threatening sanctions of the University of Toronto Students' Union for communicating strike-related information, students will not be getting the education they expect and deserve," she added.
