NAPA's Dr. Frank Overdyk to Serve as Moderator at Healthcare Technology Safety Institute Conference in Chicago

MELVILLE, NY--(Marketwired - November 12, 2014) - North American Partners in Anesthesia's (NAPA) Executive Director for Research, Technology and Innovation, Frank Overdyk, M.D., MSEE, will serve as a moderator at an event hosted by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation's (AAMI) Healthcare Technology Safety Institute (HTSI). The conference, entitled, "National Coalition to Promote Continuous Monitoring of Patients on Opioids" will take place Friday, November 14, 2014 at the American Dental Association in Chicago, IL. Dr. Overdyk will moderate a session titled "Latest Evidence: Opioids and Cardiopulmonary Arrest" in addition to the panelist question & answer period.

"In order to improve patient safety, it is essential that we continue to educate and encourage our providers and hospitals to continuously monitoring all patients on opioids," said Dr. Overdyk. "This meeting will be a coalition of stakeholders who are leading adoption of continuous monitoring by demonstrating clinically effective and financially viable models of care.

The National Coalition's goal is to promote continuous monitoring of patients on opioids. The event will bring together hospitals, patient advocates, representatives from national associations & societies, and industry-donors to develop a roadmap of best practices and strategies which hospital can use to implement continuously monitoring all patients on opioids. The meeting will include presentations from various hospitals, all using different monitoring technologies that have outcome data, a strong business case, "lessons learned" and recommendations for implementing continuous monitoring.

Dr. Overdyk's educational and professional experiences have led him to become an expert on inpatient harms associated with opioid use, particularly where it concerns patient-controlled analgesia practices. Over the course of his career, he has conducted original research and has authored numerous articles in prestigious healthcare publications on patient subgroups most at risk for this adverse event. Additional achievements include his work with the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) conferences on the topic in 2006 and 2011 at which stakeholders set a "zero tolerance" consensus for preventable harm from opioids. The APSF conferences were instrumental in generating The Joint Commission's 2012 sentinel alert on the safe use of opioids in hospitals. Furthermore, Dr. Overdyk was named by Becker's Healthcare as one of the top 50 leading experts in patient safety for 2014. He also serves as Professor of Anesthesiology at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine.
