National Apartment Association Education Institute Announces National Apartment Careers Month

Apartment Industry Significant Driver of Job Creation; Contributes $155 Billion Annual to the U.S. Economy; More Than 1.1 Million People Directly Employed

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - January 25, 2011) - The National Apartment Association Education Institute (NAAEI) today announced that February 2011 is National Apartment Careers Month.

The 2011 National Apartment Careers Month highlights the significant economic and job growth impact the industry has on the overall United States economy, directly employing more than 1.1 million people and contributing approximately $155 billion to the economy.

"During the recession, employment within the apartment industry remained one of the bright spots of the U.S. economy," said Jeff Lowry, CAPS, President of the NAAEI and Senior Vice President, Multifamily Housing, The McDougal Companies. "With 33 percent of U.S. Households being rental households and a projected increase to 37 to 38 percent by the end of the decade, demand for apartment managers, leasing consultants, and maintenance technicians will continue to increase."

Careers in apartment management offer great earning potential. A recent employment study conducted by Rosemary Goss, Ph.D. of Virginia Tech, found that Virginia Tech students who graduated with a degree in Residential Property Management, with 10 to 15 years of experience in apartment management typically earn $80,000 to $125,000 annually, with 40 percent of those with more than 15 years of experience earning more than $125,000.
