National Cadet Biathlon Championship: The Race Is On!

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 2, 2011) - The 24th National Cadet Biathlon Championship will officially commence on Sunday, March 6, 2011, in Valcartier, Québec with 60 cadet volunteers and 138 cadet biathletes from every province in Canada. The Championship will run until Friday, March 11, 2011.

First time competitor, Cadet Adriel Salzgeber from Canmore, Alberta, said, "It's quite competitive for me. It is hard shooting and my heart's just pumping so hard, it's definitely a challenge. But it's also so much fun."

For some, this championship is their first experience in a competitive setting. For others, it is a necessary step in following their role models such as former cadet biathletes Myriam Bédard, Nikki Keddie, and Jean-Philippe Le Guellec, who represented Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

The aims of the Cadet Biathlon Program are to promote physical fitness, to act as a catalyst for a cadet fitness/sports program, to promote the safe handling of rifles, and to stimulate and maintain an interest in the Cadet Program.

The combination of power and endurance of cross-country skiing, coupled with the precision and focus of marksmanship, make this sport especially challenging, fun, and rewarding.

"Biathlon really epitomizes almost everything the cadet program stands for. It's about discipline, it's about teamwork and about challenging oneself, it's about physical fitness, citizenship, and it's about having fun," says Colonel Craig Fletcher, Director Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers.

These young competitors are the best cadet biathletes in their province, and many of them have undertaken this challenge with the hope of one day making it to the Olympics. The races for the National Biathlon Championship 2011 include the mass start, pursuit race, relay race, and the patrol race.
