National Chowder Championships Getting Ready to Heat Up With Competitors From Seattle to NYC

NEWPORT, RI--(Marketwired - May 8, 2014) - Soup's almost on "Chowdah" lovers! The 33rd Annual Polar Seltzer Great Chowder Cook-Off, the original, largest and longest-running chowder championship in the country scheduled for Saturday, June 7, 2014, will welcome dozens of restaurants from across the country as they take aim at the national titles of "Best Clam," "Best Seafood," and "Best Creative" chowder and celebrate the traditional kick-off to the summer season in the beautiful, historic resort town of Newport, Rhode Island. Besides the event's all-you-can-eat chowder, serious Chowdaheads will also enjoy a Clam Cake Chow-Down, multiple stages of live music and a variety of entertainment for all ages.

The highly anticipated chowder competition for bragging rights and nearly $13,000 in prizes and awards will feature restaurants, catering companies and institutional dining facilities from the left and right coasts and everywhere in between, including Pike Place Chowder of Seattle, Washington and Luke's Lobster - Hurricane's Soup and Chowder from Greene, Maine and New York City. Competitors will be looking to stir things up with Stefano's Seafood of Long Beach Island, New Jersey and the Melville Grille in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, who are both back to defend their titles for the second time with automatic induction into the Great Chowder Cook-Off Hall of Fame on the line!

Always a fun-filled day for the chowder creators as well as the tasters, the nation's best chefs carefully prepare 4,000 gallons of delicious chowder and enthusiastically serve samples of their sumptuous creations to the tens-of-thousands of chowder loving festival attendees who also serve as judges.

"Our attendee-judges can look forward to tasting the country's best traditional and exotic chowders, whether it's from our seasoned veteran competitors or our newcomers looking for chowder glory, all while enjoying the panoramic views of Newport Harbor," said Mike Martin, Director of Newport Waterfront Events. He added that it is not too late for restaurants across the country to participate in this year's Cook-Off. "We want the competition to be as rich as possible, just like many of the chowders at our event!"
