The National Committee for UN Women-Canada Launch to Be Hosted by Senator Mobina Jaffer, QC

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 25, 2011) - Ms. Almas Jiwani, President of the National Committee for UN Women - Canada is pleased to announce that Senator Mobina Jaffer, QC will host the historic launch in Canada of the National Committee for the newly established United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) on March 29th, on Parliament Hill.

The creation of UN Women by the United Nations marks a new era for gender equality and signals the commitment by the UN Member States to accelerate progress on gender rights and women's economic empowerment. UN Women will provide a powerful voice for women's issues and will spearhead a more coordinated and effective response to gender inequalities around the world.

Senator Jaffer will be hosting the reception for the launch of the National Committee for UN Women-Canada. The event will bring together UN officials, foreign dignitaries, and members from the private sector, government, academic, and local communities.

"The launch of UN Women in Canada is a celebration of the recommitment of this country to tackling gender inequalities," said Senator Mobina Jaffer, Q.C. "Our reality is that gender inequalities are still entrenched in countries around the world, including Canada. The creation of UN Women and its National Committee in Canada will serve to address these challenges and will refocus and renew the resolve and commitment of member states to implementing sufficient energy and resources for change."

The launch of UN Women in Canada is a milestone for its newly formed National Committee to begin its work advocating UN Women programs and initiatives in Canada. "The National Committee for UN Women-Canada is honoured to partner with Honorable Senator Mobina Jaffer in celebrating the establishment of UN Women," said Ms. Jiwani. "Senator Jaffer has a long history of advocating and supporting gender equality and the elimination of violence against women and this event serves to further our engagement with the public and private sectors in working towards gender equality."

The event will feature remarks by Senator Jaffer, Dr. Doraid, Mr. Gilles Rivard, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations in New York, Mr. Abraham Abraham, UNHCR Representative in Canada, and Ms. Jiwani.

The launch in Ottawa is one of three launch events scheduled for Ontario, and celebrations will take place in cities across Canada throughout the year.
