National Consultation to Accelerate Infrastructure: Minister Baird to Meet With Provinces, Territories and Municipal Representatives

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 14, 2008) - John Baird, Canada's Transport and Infrastructure Minister, announced today that he will be traveling across Canada this week to meet with provincial, territorial and municipal representatives on accelerating infrastructure investments. Minister Baird will be working to find solutions to fast-track funding and set priorities for key infrastructure projects that will help stimulate the economy. The meetings are taking place in preparation for the upcoming First Ministers meeting, to be held on January 16, 2009.

"Prime Minister Stephen Harper recognizes that infrastructure investments play an important role in strengthening our economy," said Minister Baird. "That is why it is vital for all levels of government to do their share to ensure investments are made and solutions found to accelerate infrastructure priorities."

The discussions will focus on removing administrative hurdles which slow the approval of infrastructure projects. The goal would also be to identify priority projects that may be accelerated toward the upcoming two construction seasons.

Infrastructure summits for next week include:

- Western Canada, December 15 (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba), 300-900 Canada Place, Vancouver, British Columbia;

- Atlantic Canada, December 16 (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island), Delta Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia;

- Ontario, December 19.

Northern Territorial meeting will take place in early January, 2009, while the Quebec meeting will be held at the earliest opportunity.

The Government of Canada is significantly boosting its support for provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure through the $33-billion Building Canada infrastructure plan. In addition to improving Canada's infrastructure, the Government's plan will create jobs and stimulate our economy.
