National Defence/Media Advisory: Soldiers Depart For Afghanistan-CHANGE OF TIMING-

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 3, 2006) - Soldiers, airmen and women, and sailors from Ontario will depart from Canadian Forces Base Trenton for Kandahar, Afghanistan as a part of Operation ARCHER over the next month.

As part of Task Force Afghanistan (TFA), approximately 2,000 Canadian Forces personnel will represent Canada's commitment to NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), which contributes troops to the United Nation's authorized mission in Afghanistan. They will serve in Afghanistan for the next six months.

The main component of this deployment is based on the 1(st) Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (1 RCR) Battle Group, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Omer Lavoie.

Journalists wishing to cover this event, may do so by coming to CFB Trenton Airport terminal, located at the East end of the runway.

Media can gain access to the passenger terminal by entering the East commercial gates near Pizza Hut off Highway 2.
