National Foundation for Credit Counseling, National Sheriffs' Association, and National Association of Triads Team Up for the 4th Annual Protect Your Identity Week

Help Encourage the Fight Against Identity Theft This October

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - Oct 6, 2011) - There's always a risk of becoming a victim of identity theft. But did you know that there are simple steps that you can take to minimize that risk? The nonprofit National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) has teamed up with the National Sheriffs' Association and the National Association of Triads to encourage the fight against identity theft by hosting the 4th Annual Protect Your Identity Week, October 16-22.

Although it's important to protect ourselves from identity theft at all times and at any age, a special emphasis of this year's campaign is placed on child identity theft protection. Why? A study provided by PYIW sponsor, ALLClear ID, revealed that children are 51 times more likely to have their Social Security numbers stolen than adults. As an adult, we must now not only protect ourselves from identity theft, but guard our children, too. The first step is to arm ourselves with the education, resources and information made available through Protect Your Identity Week 2011.

Here are a few of the many ways to get involved with PYIW this year:

"It has never been more important to provide consumers with the knowledge and tools necessary to protect themselves and their families from identity theft," said Gail Cunningham, spokesperson for the NFCC. "Protect Your Identity Week engages community members and raises awareness of the dangers surrounding this growing crime."

Please join the fight against ID theft by encouraging your friends and family to visit www.ProtectYourIDNow.org where you'll find consumer protection tips, stats on ID theft, and an event locator map.
