National Grassroots Automotive Coalition Applauds New Fuel Economy Standards

DETROIT, MI--(Marketwire - December 19, 2007) - The Automotive Jobs Action Coalition (AJAC), a national grassroots coalition representing chambers of commerce and business organizations from around the United States, expressed its support for the fuel economy legislation being signed by President Bush today.

"The new federal fuel economy standards are reasonable, achievable and protect American jobs," said Rebecca Schneider, AJAC executive director. "Our coalition of thousands of businesses from across the nation has been working for months to get a bill to the president's desk that is in the best interest of job providers and the economy."

Forty-five chambers of commerce and business associations from around the country supported AJAC. The campaign was in response to efforts to arbitrarily raise Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations to unachievable levels that threatened American jobs.

The coalition advocated for research and development as a means to promote better energy efficiency in cars and trucks. It supported accelerating the availability of advanced technologies and alternative fuels, such as hybrid vehicles and ethanol, to achieve greater fuel economy and cleaner environmental conditions.

"The bill also calls for developing alternative energy sources, which is a win for the nation's energy security," continued Schneider.

About AJAC

AJAC is a grassroots coalition, representing over 100,000 businesses from around the United States that is concerned about the negative impact arbitrary increases for fuel economy standards would have on the 2.3 million automotive related jobs in America. AJAC is working to educate policymakers about alternatives to extreme increases in the CAFE standards.
