National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation: No Election Please!

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 22, 2011) - The National Pensioners and Senior Citizens Federation (NPSCF) calls for parliamentarians to reluctantly support this budget. The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) improvements are one-third of what is needed but an election will not remedy this shortcoming. We call on the government and opposition parties to work together to amend the budget for a better outcome for seniors in poverty.

An election now would cost over 300 million dollars and produce another Tory government. An election is therefore pointless in the face of this disappointing budget.

We need retirement security now; for all seniors in need of help as well as future generations of retirees. We ask parliamentarians to use their best efforts to deliver a better deal for seniors. A rush to the polls will not help us.

The NPSCF has 350 affiliates across Canada representing over one million senior Canadians. In February, our NPSCF executive lobbied members of parliament to address poverty that affects over 600,000 seniors, especially women. We also lobbied to double the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) for retirement security for future pensioners.
