National PTA Statement on Aurora, Colorado Movie Theater Shooting

Supports Families in Talking to Children About Violence

ALEXANDRIA, VA--(Marketwire - Jul 20, 2012) - The following statement can be attributed to National PTA® President Betsy Landers:

National PTA extends its deepest sympathies to the children, young adults and families affected by the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado early today. This horrible tragedy saddens our country and affects every single community.

All families feel the fear and apprehension created by these tragic circumstances. We all share in the sense of loss and hurt.

In light of the challenges families will face in speaking with their children about this tragedy, National PTA offers families several supportive resources to assist parents, families, schools and PTAs. One specific resource is called "Discussing Hate and Violence with Your Child." This and several other resources on violence are accessible and downloadable for free at PTA.org.

National PTA believes the protection of children in every community, no matter where they are, is a fundamental right and has made this the utmost priority for our work and advocacy.
