National Trucking Week Message from Canadian Trucking Alliance

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 18, 2005) -

National Trucking Week (Sept 18 - 24) celebrates careers in trucking

Trucking in Canada is a $54.7 billion industry that employs over 260,000 drivers and somewhere in the order of 400,000 Canadians overall. It's a diverse industry made up of a few large companies and thousands of small and medium-sized businesses and independent owner-operators.

Grocery store shelves are stocked and the supplies we need for daily living are available when we need them, thanks to the country's safe and reliable trucking industry. During National Trucking Week we salute the men and women who work in the trucking industry and who form the backbone of our economy. Without you the country would literally stop.

National Trucking Week, which rolls out this weekend (Sept. 18-24) - is an event held annually to spotlight the important contributions made by Canadians who work in the industry. The week also serves as an opportunity for us to raise awareness of the exciting career opportunities the industry has to offer.

The huge growth in trucking competition and just-in-time delivery has caused a rising demand for highly skilled drivers. Studies suggest a growing shortage of drivers with the skills and experience needed in today's complex trucking industry.

In fact, about 37,000 new truck drivers will be needed each year between now and 2008, which makes trucking an attractive career choice for young people looking for stable jobs, especially given that Canadian truck drivers earn more than the national average. And it doesn't stop there -- there are many opportunities beyond driving that most people outside the industry aren't even aware of, including dispatching, maintenance, management and even running your own business as an independent owner-operator.

So the next time you're in the market for a job - think trucking. It's in the market for you.
