FRESNO, CA--(Marketwire - Mar 29, 2012) - National University, the second-largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in California and the 12th-largest in the nation, is launching a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia (MSNA) degree program at its Fresno campus located at 20 E River Park Place West, Fresno, CA 93720. Classes for the MSNA program begin in April.
The MSNA program will accommodate critical care nurses who are interested in becoming Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA). Heightened interest in this area stems from the growing need throughout the nation to improve access to care and safe anesthesia delivery. The program will facilitate the demand for CRNAs, many of whom currently act as the sole anesthesia providers in two-thirds of all rural hospitals and who are the main providers of anesthesia to expectant mothers.

"We have made every effort to ensure that our program effectively educates students in the current science, practice, and technology utilized in anesthesia care delivery that is essential for success in this highly-respected area."
The program's curriculum was designed with a strong evidence-based practice underpinning and is taught in a two-phase model. The first phase is a one year, in-classroom didactic instruction that integrates high fidelity simulation, followed by a 15-month clinical practicum, which serves as phase two.
Graduate students will be exposed to all specialties and techniques of clinical anesthesia, including but not limited to:
- Regional anesthesia
- General anesthesia
- Monitored anesthesia care
- Local infiltration techniques
- Pain management
The program competitively offers students the use of National University's state-of-the-art Anesthesia Simulation Center, which is equipped with both an adult and pediatric high fidelity patient simulator, low fidelity airway management simulators, regional and neuraxial anesthesia simulators, advanced airway technology, and all other equipment encountered in the perioperative setting. The program is also affiliated with multiple dynamic clinical sites in which students will gain comprehensive clinical experiences.
