National Volunteer Week: Statement From the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 17, 2007) - April 15 to April 21 is National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate the millions of Canadians who give freely and generously of themselves to make our communities better for everyone.

I know that almost 12 million of us volunteer in different ways in our communities. Our collective contribution is an important part of Canada's social and economic fabric. Canada has the second largest community non-profit and voluntary sector in the world, with 161,000 registered community non-profit and volunteer organizations and hundreds of thousands of unregistered ones. The voluntary sector estimates that charities and non-profits contribute $112 billion a year to Canada's economy, and creates employment for two million Canadians.

As we pause to reflect on the importance of National Volunteer Week, I'd like to commend the millions of volunteers who contribute to making life just that much better for us all, and I'd like to encourage those of you who do not yet volunteer to think about the many ways that you can make a positive difference to the lives of your friends and neighbours.

The Honourable Monte Solberg, PC

Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Canada
