Navy's SPAWAR Systems Center Identifies Optelian Modulator as Key Component in Avionics Photonics

Optelian's Versawave Division Achieves First End-to-End System With Noise Figure < 28 dB at 40 GHz With a Multi-Octave Radio Frequency Photonic Link

MARIETTA, GA and OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - Oct 30, 2013) - Intuitive Packet Optical Networking™ solution provider, Optelian, is at the forefront of advanced optical modulator technology, as highlighted in a recent paper by the SPAWAR Systems Center of Navy Research Labs.

The SPAWAR paper, titled "Performance of a 40 GHz RF photonic balanced link using a polarization modulator," discusses a solution based on Optelian's Versawave polarization modulator. The paper's authors believe the solution is the first achievement of an end-to-end system Noise Figure < 28 dB at 40 GHz for a multi-octave RF photonic link, enabling optical system flexibility not seen before. SPAWAR's paper was presented at the IEEE Avionics Fiber-Optics and Photonics Conference, held October 1-3, 2013, in Atlanta.

"Versawave's innovative, industry-leading technology is helping one of our long-standing customers advance research into avionics photonics," said Simon Benwell, Business Unit Manager for Versawave - A Division of Optelian. "We are delighted to see results published that highlight the value of the high-bandwidth and flat response of Versawave polarization modulators, especially in avionics and ship-board systems. Our new line of > 60 Ghz modulators have the same low chirp, enabling even more advanced systems. We look forward to working with our customers such as Navy Research Labs to develop key features for these markets."

The Avionics Fiber-Optics and Photonics Conference provides an indispensable international forum for the academic, industry and government R&D communities developing fiber-optic/photonic components and system technologies for avionics. The conference also looks at fiber-optic/photonic technologies across mobile platforms, surface ships, submarines and ground vehicles.

Dr. Larry Tarof, Chief Scientist for the Versawave Division, noted that, "polarization modulation is a unique approach within the industry to the core functionality of the device. The versatility afforded by this technique, enabling amplitude, polarization and phase modulation, lends itself to a wide range of commercial applications. These performance numbers are an independent confirmation that our device can make a significant difference in avionics, marine and other mobile photonics."
