Naxos Launches Distribution of New York's Cantaloupe Music

FRANKLIN, TN--(Marketwire - January 11, 2011) - On January 1, 2011, Naxos of America began distribution of Cantaloupe Music, a label out of Brooklyn, New York that is renowned for its recordings of venturesome new music. Created in 2001, Cantaloupe Music is the brainchild of the three founders of the celebrated Bang on a Can Festival (Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe) and Bang on a Can managing director Kenny Savelson. Over the next year, Naxos will release all of the label's back catalog, former web-only releases, and new recordings from Toby Twining, Julia Wolfe, Bang on a Can All-Stars, David Lang, Sentieri Selvaggi, and many others.

Naxos of America will launch distribution of the label with Threads, an album of percussion music composed by Paul Lansky and performed by SO Percussion. Lansky is best known for a prominent sample of his work on the Radiohead song Idioteque, from the 2000 album Kid A. "The usual notion of percussion," says Lansky, "is that it's loud and noisy, so I designed it perversely to be lyrical. I think it's one of my best pieces. There are arias that are mallet movements with vibraphones and crotales. Chorus movements are big, loud drum movements. They alternate."

Headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville, Naxos of America is the #1 independent classical music distributor in the U.S. Specializing in state-of-the-art distribution, marketing and promotion, Naxos of America distributes nearly 20,000 SKUs to traditional brick and mortar retail, as well as offering a comprehensive suite of services tailored to consumer direct fulfillment. Naxos of America is also the largest digital distributor of independent classical music, supplying a catalog of over 25,000 albums to hundreds of digital download and mobile outlets worldwide.

Cantaloupe Music is the record label created in March 2001 by the three founders of New York's legendary Bang on a Can Festival: composers Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe, and Bang on a Can managing director Kenny Savelson. Cantaloupe Music has made a massive impact in the new music community, and been recognized by critics and fans around the globe for its adventurous sounds. Through Cantaloupe Music, Bang on a Can continues its mission to spread the gospel of risk-taking new music. Bang on a Can -- dedicated to the work of composers across the entire aesthetic spectrum -- has created a home for musical inventors, misfits, and pioneers.
