NBA Star Mo Williams Turns to RK Motors Charlotte to Update and Restore His Buick Muscle Car

CHARLOTTE, NC--(Marketwire - Jun 1, 2011) - NBA all star and LA Clippers point guard Mo Williams entrusted the team at RK Motors Charlotte, one of the nation's premier restorers, re-sellers and builders of classic, muscle and high-performance cars, to update and restore his 1972 Buick Centurion muscle car. The Buick has been owned by the NBA player for nearly eight years and recently arrived at RK Motors Restoration shop in Mentor, Ohio, for transformation.

Intrigued by the classic car hobby, the Buick was the first classic car purchased by the NBA star. He rewarded himself with the car after being drafted by the NBA Utah Jazz in 2003.

"This Buick is my pride and joy," added Williams. "It's a symbol of my successful NBA career, so I was very picky about who I'd let touch my car. After looking at their work on other vintage muscle cars, I knew the team at RK Motors Restoration would take good care of it."

The Buick Centurion first appeared in 1971 as a replacement for the mid-line full-sized Wildcat. The 1972 Centurion was promoted as a mid-level luxury car with a 455 cid big-block V8 and three-speed Turbo Hydra-matic transmission. Standard amenities included a notchback bench seat with a center armrest, luxurious upholstery, variable-ratio power steering and power front disc brakes. Only 36,165 total Centurions were built in 1972.

The expert craftsmen at RK Motors Restoration focused on updating the exterior of the custom Midnight Blue Pearl Buick. The body was block sanded and primer sealed, and a new finish of base coats and clear coats were also applied. The side trim and emblems on the exterior of the car were smoothed and deleted for a more modern appearance, while all the chrome was replaced and the stainless trim polished. The team also replaced the worn white vinyl top with a new soft feel top. The trunk was not left untouched; the compartment was improved to match the interior of the car and now features updated stereo components.

During the restoration process, the motor was removed and engine bay detailed. The Buick now also features a fuel injection system to maximize the power of the big block 455 cid engine.

"Our OEM restoration shop combines the latest technology with old world craftsmanship to create cars that our customers dream about," said Joseph Carroll, RK Motors Charlotte president and CEO. "We were honored to tackle Mo Williams' Buick Centurion because the car holds such a special meaning to him. Just like we do with every client, we collaborated with Mo to outline a build that would meet his goals."

RK Motors Restoration's work is done in-house, including body and paintwork, motor and transmission rebuilds and all final assembly, which allows RK Motors Restoration to maintain its strict quality control. The team catalogs and documents every step of the restoration process with digital images and detailed notes so customers have a restoration summary at the completion of each project.
