NCPDP 2013 Fall Educational Summit to Focus on Patient Safety

Kaiser Permanente's Suarez Is Featured Keynote Speaker

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwired - Sep 25, 2013) - The National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) announced today it is hosting a special educational summit focused on using standards and best practices to safeguard patient safety. The one-day event, "Aligning Healthcare to Improve Patient Safety: NCPDP Is More Than Claims and Billing," will take place on November 5 at The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront in Portland, Oregon.

NCPDP's Fall Educational Summit will feature speakers from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Surescripts, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several leading organizations discussing an array of topics including:

  • Milliliter as Standard Measure for Dosing Liquid Medications
  • Continued Improvements on Labeling Medications Containing Acetaminophen
  • Universal Medication Schedule to Simplify Medication Administration (UMS)
  • Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMP)
  • Patient Safety Impact of Standards for Medication History and ePrescribing
  • Regulatory Initiatives Becoming Effective in 2014
  • Ongoing NCPDP Patient Safety Initiatives (e.g., REMS, ePrior Authorization, Drug Description and Product Naming Requirements)

The featured keynote speaker will be Walter Suarez, MD, MPH, Executive Director, Health IT Strategy and Policy for Kaiser Permanente. A physician and transformational thought leader on medical information systems, Dr. Suarez will review the development status of a risk-based regulatory framework for health IT that includes mobile medical applications, promotes innovation, protects patient safety, and avoids regulatory duplication. Dr. Suarez will discuss key principles, components and characteristics, and the way the industry is reacting to, and working towards its adoption and implementation.

The Educational Summit will be held the day before NCPDP's November Work Group meetings. NCPDP Work Group meetings provide a venue for its members and other industry stakeholders to work together to create solutions for healthcare. Non-members registered for the Summit can attend work group meetings at no additional charge.
