NCPDP Webinar to Address Technology Solutions for Managing REMS

Offers Pharmacies and Manufacturers Guidance on How to Improve Patient Care When Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies Are Required

SCOTTSDALE, AZ--(Marketwire - February 18, 2011) - A comprehensive Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) webinar offers solutions for pharmacies and pharmaceutical manufacturers to optimize patient care. Hosted by the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP), a not-for-profit pharmacy standards development organization, REMS Webinar: An In-Depth Look at Industry Concerns and Technology Solutions will be held on February 24, 2011, at 12:00 p.m. EST. The 90-minute webinar will provide a roadmap for REMS, an FDA mandated tool to help ensure that certain drug benefits outweigh risks, and allow patients access to medications that carry safety concerns that can be managed through appropriate use.

NCPDP has developed a reference guide for REMS to ensure compliance, manage physician engagement, benefits and workflow, and maximize patient access and effectiveness. The guide is intended for use with NCPDP's ANSI-accredited Telecommunication Standard and Implementation Guide. The REMS reference guide was developed using NCPDP's collaborative and consensus-building process which has produced standards that have been named in various government regulations and policies, such as HIPAA, MMA (Medicare Modernization Act) and HITECH.

The webinar will cover:

  • An overview of REMS for prescription drugs
  • The "elements to assure safe use" that the FDA can use to implement a REMS
  • Challenges and opportunities that REMS presents for pharmacists, pharmacies and manufacturers
  • The pharmacy industry's response to REMS
  • Technology solutions that can be employed to improve patient care when a REMS is required
  • Manual REMS processes and electronic REMS processes
