NCQA Recognizes HealthPartners for Meeting New Quality Standards

NCQA Standards Measure Wellness, Prevention, Disease Management

BLOOMINGTON, MN -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 4, 2006 -- HealthPartners is one of the first health plans in the nation and the only health plan to date in Minnesota to be recognized for meeting new voluntary standards from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, an independent organization that accredits and certifies health plans. Care Management and Health Improvement standards measure health plan performance on wellness and prevention, helping members with chronic conditions and complex case management. Among HealthPartners' programs that contributed to their recognition are:

-- Disease management which provides support for more than 100,000
members with 23 conditions such as diabetes, asthma and depression.
-- Case management which provides support for those with multiple or
    complex conditions.
-- HealthPartners CareLine, staffed by specially trained nurses, answered
more than half a million calls from members last year.

"Measuring and rewarding quality care improves health, provides members with information to make smart health care decisions and ensures that we're getting the best value for our health care dollars," said Gail Amundson, M.D. HealthPartners medical director for quality, measurement and provider incentives. HealthPartners is one of 56 early adopters of the new standards. Health plans will be required to meet the new standards beginning next year to receive NCQA Accreditation.

HealthPartners is also one of 48 health plans that are early adopters of additional new NCQA standards that measure physician and hospital quality. The new program will help members compare doctors and hospitals on quality and cost. More than three dozen of the nation's largest companies have endorsed the physician and hospital standards including 3M, General Electric and Wells Fargo.
