NCSBN Announces Signing of "Memorandum of Understanding" Between Nursing Regulatory Bodies

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - May 12, 2011) - In keeping with its vision to advance regulatory excellence worldwide, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN®) (www.ncsbn.org) announces the signing of a "Memorandum of Understanding" between itself and the following organizations: An Bord Altranais; College of Nurses of Ontario; College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia; Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia; Nursing Council of New Zealand; Nursing & Midwifery Council - United Kingdom; and Singapore Nursing Board on May 5, 2011.

The world today functions at an ever-accelerating pace in which communication is often instantaneous, technology expands at an exponential level and almost transparent international borders are the norm. The impetus for this collaboration arose out of an acknowledgement that nursing regulatory bodies across the world face many of the same challenges; are charged with the similar mission of protecting the public's health, safety and welfare; and have a desire to share best practices. The unique relationship between these organizations provides the opportunity for them to learn from, share with, and assist each other with individual and mutual goals.

One of NCSBN's core values is collaboration -- the forging of solutions through respect, diversity and the collective strength of all stakeholders. Because of this, NCSBN is dedicated to helping to facilitate a multicultural exchange of thoughts and ideas. All of these organizations recognize that globalization means that what each organization does has impact, and in turn, each organization is impacted by the actions of others. The increased mobility of nurses from country to country causes nursing regulatory bodies to interface and interact with each other over issues involving licensed nurses. It is hoped that this new collaboration will help nursing regulatory bodies work cooperatively to develop regulatory standards.

NCSBN will also take the information gained through this new international relationship back to its own member boards of nursing for use in their mission of public protection.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose members include the boards of nursing in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories -- American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands. There are also seven international associate members.

Mission: NCSBN provides education, service and research through collaborative leadership to promote evidence-based regulatory excellence for patient safety and public protection.

The statements and opinions expressed are those of NCSBN and not the individual member state or territorial boards of nursing.
