NCSBN Launches National Nursing Database

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - Oct 16, 2012) - The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN®), www.ncsbn.org, has launched the National Nursing Database (NND), the first comprehensive source of nursing licensure and disciplinary statistics for the U.S. and the territories of American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and the Virgin Islands.

The NND is derived from NCSCN's Nursys®, the only national database for verification of nurse licensure, discipline and practice privileges for registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs)*. It is comprised of data obtained directly from the licensure systems of U.S. boards of nursing (BONs) through frequent, secured updates.

Now available to the general public, the NND offers interactive maps highlighting the information obtained from BONs such as the number of active licenses (both RN and LPN/VN, and total overall) and discipline data providing users with a snapshot of nursing statistics based on the more than 4.4 million RN and LPN/VN licenses in Nursys.

"We are happy to provide this new database and hope that these statistics are of use to researchers, educators and the general public. It is our hope that we will continue to upgrade and revise the database to build on the information that will be publicly available in the future," comments NCSBN Board of Directors President Myra A. Broadway, JD, MS, RN, executive director, Maine State Board of Nursing.

The NND database can be accessed at https://www.ncsbn.org/3873.htm.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a not-for-profit organization whose members include the boards of nursing in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and four U.S. territories -- American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands. There are also 12 associate members.

Mission: NCSBN provides education, service and research through collaborative leadership to promote evidence-based regulatory excellence for patient safety and public protection.

The statements and opinions expressed are those of NCSBN and not the individual member state or territorial boards of nursing.

*There are 59 boards of nursing that share discipline data and 50 (currently) that share licensure statistics.
