NDP CANDIDATE STEPPING DOWN IN ALBERNI-QUALICUM

Attention: Assignment Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor PORT ALBERNI--(CCNMatthews - April 1, 2005) - In the face of news reports that appeared in the Vancouver Sun, the following statement was issued today by Dave Thompson.

"More than 16 years ago, some very unfortunate events took place at the Vancouver Police Department, when I was a police officer trainee.

I have been unfairly accused of being involved in those events and I cleared my name in 1992 with the Vancouver Police Department.

I would like nothing more than to be able to clear my name now in the court of public opinion. But I choose to honour my settlement with the Vancouver Police Department that included a non-disclosure agreement, an agreement that I have upheld to this day.

I do not wish to involve the New Democratic Party in this situation, and so I am stepping down as the nominated candidate for Alberni-Qualicum to assist the NDP here and across BC.

I want to thank all of the people who supported me in my campaign, and in particular I want to thank those people who supported me over the last two weeks. Their support has helped me at this very difficult time.
