NDP Leader Jack Layton lauds Nomination of Carol Hughes in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing: Hughes Named Federal NDP Candidate

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 4, 2007) - Carol Hughes and NDP Layton joined New Democrats in Kapuskasing this afternoon to celebrate her nomination as party's federal candidate in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing. Ms. Hughes was nominated by acclamation at two nomination meetings in the large riding - Friday night in Elliot Lake and today's in Kapuskasing.

"I'm so honoured to be running for the NDP once again. I am ready to win and represent the working and middle-class families of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing," said Ms. Hughes.

Mr. Layton applauded Ms. Hughes' nomination, and said she has what it takes to win the next campaign.

"It's great to see such a talented candidate with a motivated team behind her to take on the Conservatives and Liberals in the next campaign," said Mr. Layton. "The ordinary people of Northern Ontario need a strong voice like Carol's, because the Conservatives can't be trusted to stick up for average families and the Liberals can't be trusted to stand up to Stephen Harper."

Ms. Hughes is the former President of the Algoma Manitoulin and District Labour Council and also worked with Probation and Parole Services, Elliot Lake and Youth Justice Services, Sudbury. She is a well-known community volunteer and activist who has run twice previously for the NDP - coming in a very close second to the Liberal incumbent in 2006.

Ms. Hughes said a strategy to keep jobs in Northern Ontario would be amoung her top priorities. Workers in the Northern Ontario lumber industry have been suffering as a result of being ignored by Liberal and Conservative governments and Harper's soft-wood lumber sell-out that sent billions of dollars to the U.S.

"The people of Northern Ontario are tired being ignored by Liberals and Conservatives who sit by and watch our communities being destroyed as more and more working families are forced to leave to make a living wage," said Ms. Hughes.

"I'm excited to be standing with Jack Layton and the strong NDP team - we are the only party with a plan to clean up the environment, keeps jobs in Northern Ontario, make life more affordable and improve health and education for working families."
