NDP MP Tony Martin Lauds Nomination of Carol Hughes in Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing

Hughes named federal NDP Candidate

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 4, 2007) - Carol Hughes and NDP MP Tony Martin (Sault Ste Marie) joined New Democrats in Elliot Lake this evening to celebrate her nomination as party's federal candidate in Algoma-Manitoulin Kapuskasing. Ms. Hughes was nominated by acclamation at two nomination meetings in the large riding - tonight's in Elliot Lake and Saturday afternoon in Kapuskasing.

"I'm so honoured to be running for the NDP once again. I am ready to win and represent the working and middle-class families of Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing," said Ms. Hughes.

Mr. Martin congratulated Ms. Hughes and said she has what it takes to win the next campaign.

"I'm looking forward to working with Carol to take on the Conservatives and Liberals in the next campaign," said Mr. Martin. "While foreign companies make huge profits off of our resources, working and middle-class families in Northern Ontario are working harder and harder just to make ends meet. They deserve better, and I know when they send Carol to Ottawa, families in this riding will finally have an MP who will stand up for them."

Ms. Hughes, is the former President of the Algoma Manitoulin and District Labour Council and also worked with Probation and Parole Services, Elliot Lake and Youth Justice Services, Sudbury. She is a well-known community volunteer and activist who has run twice previously for the NDP - coming in a very close second to the Liberal incumbent in 2006.

Ms. Hughes spoke about the need to stand up for seniors, who are feeling especially squeezed after years of Conservative and Liberal neglect.

"After a lifetime of building our country, they deserve fairness and dignity in their retirement years. Instead, even middle-income retirees have trouble making ends meet. Rising drug costs and just finding the basic services of a family doctor are a terrible strain on many seniors," said Ms. Hughes.

"Seniors, farmers, the forestry sector and our families deserve better, and as the MP for this riding, I will make sure they come first."
