NDP Only Party Standing Up for Transit Users

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 12, 2007) - As TTC Commissioners struggle with potential cuts and fare increases only one provincial party has stepped up with sustainable urban transit funding. The NDP commitment will restore the 50% operating funding for public transit beginning January 2008. In exchange, the NDP plan would require municipalities to freeze fares for two years.

"You could just show up for ribbon cuttings on transit projects and then sneak off without helping to pay to operate it. The McGuinty Government has made that into an art form," said Peter Tabuns, MPP Toronto Danforth and NDP Transportation Critic. "However, long-term sustainable operating funding is needed to give certainty to transit riders about service and costs. The NDP is the only party willing to do this."

By providing sustainable operating funding, transit commissions will not have to rely so heavily on the farebox.

"Working families deserve an enhanced transit network and lower wait times. Our commitment provides a true partnership between cities and the province. This is essential to build transit and achieve our climate change objectives," said Tabuns.
