NDP PLATFORM OUTLINES LEGISLATIVE AGENDA: Layton Says NDP Providing a Work Plan for the Next Parliament

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 11, 2006) - NDP Leader Jack Layton said the legislative agenda flowing from the New Democratic Platform provides a good work plan for the next Parliament.

"After the election, New Democrat MPs will be putting forward a legislative agenda that will ensure Parliament gets results for working families," Layton said. "After 12 years of Liberal neglect, there's lots to do."

The NDP legislative agenda includes:

- Protecting public health care with a Protection of Public Health
Care Act.
- Ensuring parents have the choice of quality child care with a new
Child Care Act.
- Cleaning up politics with an Election Reform Act, a Fixed
Elections Act, a Leadership Accountability Act, an Accountability
to the Electorate Act, and a Protection of Whistleblowers Act. New
Democrats will also propose amendments to improve the Lobbyist
Registration Act and the Access to Information Protection of
Privacy Act.
- Cleaning up the environment with a Clean Air Act, a Clean Water
Act, and a Polluter Pay and Toxic Pollution Reduction Act.
- Reducing crime with a Safe Communities Act.
- Protecting working people with a Workers First Act to protect
pensions and wages in bankruptcies and amend the Canada Labour
Code to ban replacement workers.

"Getting movement on these 15 pieces of legislation will be a top priority for New Democrats," Layton said. "We'll make sure Parliament works for working families."
